Works Standalone or With Your Server

Out of the box, Notabula syncs privately through your own iCloud โ€” no account, no server. Or point it at your self-hosted Notabula server for sharing and more. Learn how to run one โ†’

Do I need a server to use Notabula?โ–ถ
No. A new install starts in iCloud mode โ€” your notes live on your device and sync privately across your Apple devices through your own iCloud, with no sign-in. A self-hosted server is optional.
How do I connect to my self-hosted server?โ–ถ
Go to Settings โ†’ Storage โ†’ Notabula Server, relaunch the app, and sign in with your server account. Server mode adds sharing, public links, revision history, and link previews. The two modes keep separate on-device stores, so their data never mixes.
Does it work offline?โ–ถ
Yes โ€” Notabula is local-first. The on-device store is the source of truth, so reading and writing notes works fully offline; changes sync when a connection returns.
How do locked notes work?โ–ถ
Lock a note with a passphrase and it's encrypted on your device (PBKDF2 โ†’ AES-256-GCM) before it syncs โ€” the server only ever stores ciphertext. Locked notes are currently a server-mode feature, and they interoperate with the Notabula web app.
How do I add photos or scan documents?โ–ถ
In the editor, attach images from your photo library, or use the document scanner to capture pages with the camera straight into a note. The app asks for photo or camera permission the first time you use each.
How do reminders work?โ–ถ
Set a reminder on a note and it fires as a local notification on your device. Allow notifications when prompted (or enable them for Notabula in iOS Settings).
What does "Share to Notabula" do?โ–ถ
The share extension lets you send content from other apps straight into your notes on your server. It only shares what you explicitly choose, and only to your own configured server.
How do I reset or delete my data?โ–ถ
Delete individual notes any time (your server keeps a 30-day "Recently Deleted" in server mode). Signing out of a server clears its credentials from the device. Deleting the app removes its on-device data; anything synced to your own iCloud or server is managed there by you.
